The President of Chile is both the chief of state and the head of government. Under the constitution, the President is elected by popular vote to serve for a period of four years, with immediate re-election being prohibited. The shorter period (previously the term was six years) allows for parliamentary and presidential elections to be synchronised.(Note that France in 2002 voted to reduce its presidential terms from seven years to five, for the same reason). Chile has had several instances of people taking the office of President without an election, typically following coup d'état. The most recent of these was Augusto Pinochet in 1974.
The official seat of the President of Chile is the Palacio de La Moneda in the capital Santiago.
