I am a New Orleanian who started contributing to Wikipedia in September of 2002, became an Administrator in February of 2003, and a year later became Wikipedia's 7th Bureaucrat.
Before evacuating for Hurricane Katrina I was often in the top 20 most active Wikipedians. More about me: User:Infrogmation/Personal info
One of the contributions I was most proud of were the many images I tracked down from now public domain paper sources and scanned and uploaded to Wikipedia. Many of those paper originals no longer exist. Many of those scans I uploaded to Wikipedia also seem not to exist. How does that happen? Someone replaces the unique scanned image in the article with some other image they've yoinked off the web (sometimes replacing a public domain image with a "fair use" one), then the unique image gets deleted as an orphan. So it goes.
Since I got back to my beloved devastated city at the start of October of 2005, I've been taking many digital photographs and uploading them (hundreds over a noisy home telephone line) to Wikimedia commons. At writing, the vast majority of the images in Category:Hurricane Katrina aftermath in New Orleans and its associated pages were taken by me.
